As he was preparing for his secret trip to Baghdad, George W. Bush was missing a once-in-a-decade party Friday night in his new neighborhood. The rear of the Bushes’ new home backs up to the dramatic front driveway of the estate of Roxanne and Gene Phillips (former home of the late Lamar Hunt and his wife, Norma). If the Bushes had been home to peer over the hedge, they would have seen the Phillips driveway looking like the entrance to Versailles for philanthropist Nancy Hamon’s 90th birthday party. Ten years ago, the Phillips hosted a similar gala for Nancy’s 80th. Friday, guests were asked to wear black tie or gypsy attire. Wearing a thin gypsy mustache was the ultimate disguise for clean-cut former UT Southwestern Medical Center president, Kern Wildenthal. He went unrecognized by some old friends. Shelter doesn’t come much grander than the Phillips home, which was built in the ‘60s by then-owner Jin Ling, founder of LTV. After everyone feasted on caviar, the doors of the dramatic dining room swung wide to reveal the custom-made dining table for 24 laden with a lush buffet. Among the guests were Nancy’s long-time attorney and adviser Jack Roach and his wife, Laura, fellow philanthropist Margaret McDermott and her daughter, Mary McDermott Cook, SMU benefactor Nancy Dedman and friends such as Nancy Lemmon, Carol Poston, Rob Kendall, Dottie Goddard, Carole and John Ridings Lee and former Dallasite Andre Dunstetter who flew in from his home in Paris.
